Warren St. Mary Parish to celebrate anniversary

WARREN – During Andrew Jackson’s second term as seventh president of the United States, one year before Davy Crockett was killed at the Alamo and one year after the wilderness community here became a chartered village, the humble beginnings of St. Mary Parish were recorded. The year was 1835 and Father Patrick O’Dwyer ministered to the pioneer Catholics under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Cincinnati. For the next three decades, missionary priests celebrated the sacraments in the fields and private homes of Warren.

NORTH CANTON — Brother Joseph Power can’t enjoy food right now. “But I enjoy people. I enjoy people very much,” he quickly asserted, with his trademark British accent and a soft-spoken eloquence of which the listening ear never seems to tire. The genuine love he shows for others has endeared this member of the Brothers of Christian Instruction to the Walsh University community here, ever since he arrived from England to serve on the college faculty 45 years ago.

“Our goal is to have the best turnaround record in the nation,” Walsh Head Coach Jim Dennison. That was the goal Jim Dennison and his 2009 Cavaliers set. Well they more than reached that goal finishing 8-3 and ranked 16th in the NAIA. The Cavs narrowly missed the post season, leaving that as the main objective in 2010.
